I've found these stories enchanting ever since discovering them 50 years ago. In spite of criticisms to the contrary, Ballard is capable of writing great prose, verging on the poetic (and he does this best in The Crystal World), and Vermilion Sands exemplifies this. There's a strange and attractive mixture of wry humour, inspired invention and psychological insight in these stories, and the world he has vreated is one that, like him, I would be happy to inhabit. I',m glad this story collection has found other admirers.
